The Beginning

2010 was going to be a year of excitement.

My first son was turning one, I was due in early July with number two, my husband was turning 30 ... life as our family was just beginning.  Little did I know my genetic scheme would turn my life and my families life upside down.

January 13th I was admitted to the hospital with Guillian Barre Syndrome; a rare autoimmune disorder that affects the peripheral nervous system.  Once a busy full time working mother I was now paralyzed from the neck down.  The H1N1 vaccine I received 6 weeks earlier affected the mylon sheath around my nerves not allowing signals to travel through my body.  Although recoverable, it still takes time.

I was admitted to the hospital and spent the next five months there .... 8 days in ICU, 21 days in Cardio, 48 days in Rehab, and 70 days in Women's Center.

I was released on June 9th.  I came home with a healthy 3 week old baby boy, good friends I made in the hospital, one enormous bill, and a long road of therapy, pain, cramping, progress, and relearning ahead.

This is my journey to recovery ... the good and the bad.

You are the best! I know you can handle this and will recover just fine. Keep your head up. This is a great idea and a great way to "talk it out" and I will be reading it all the time to see how you are doing since I am so far away and can't come see you all the time. I love you! :o)

You are really amazing! Putting all your thoughts down as you go through things is a great idea.

Wow Steph, I'm so sorry this has happened to you....I had heard about it but was happy to read about it in your blog....glad things are going better....but know about long recoveries....I'm still recovering from my own ordeal from when I was 16....long story and really I am fine now but will never be quite the same...so all I'm saying is I understand and have felt a lot of what you have written...my recovery was a lot shorter...but it also still goes on just like yours...it was easier to live with when I was younger and could bounce back a little easier...Wow wish I had read this sooner and could have been at your benefit....Our life is crazy, everyone lives away so I am always traveling to see my kids and grandkids...love you so much and wish the best for you and your family, please give my love to them...
